Brickyard Retreat is a repurposed glazed tile factory. Our 25 rooms and suites all open to vistas of the Great Wall though story and a half window walls. We also offer 11 vacation homes nearby with 2 to 5 bedrooms that were created from village homes. Brickyard was founded by Jim Spear & Liang Tang, who live nearby and designed all of our facilities

Chairman’s Suite is 94 square meters with separate living room and bedroom, each with fireplace. Bath includes enclosed powder room, dressing and vanity area, rainforest shower and a Japanese soaking tub with a Great Wall view. This Suite also offers 59 square meter private courtyard with outdoor shower.

Sleeping Buddha is a 33 square meter studio with one queen bed, armchair, and open bathroom perched among the treetops.

Apricot Lane features a restoration of one of Beigou’s oldest houses, a 3-bay stone cottage, connected to a dramatically modern great room by a zig zag hallway. This home features a captivating entry to the private courtyard, a surprise skylight framing a view of the Great Wall, and a garden with lush lawn, mature apricot trees, and view terrace with an indoor-outdoor fireplace. Apricot Lane is our newest home, just finished in summer 2016, and was designed by Jim Spear with his signature fusion of East and West. Maximum Occupancy: 5 people (babies under three years of age do not count towards occupancy limit, 1 cot can be provided). 2 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms with large showers, one with a queen bed, the other with 2 twin beds. To get to Big Rock House you drive up the hill in the middle of Beigou Village, the creek and forested ridge on one side, stone walls and sturdy brick dwellings on the other, sudden glimpses of sky and Great Wall. You park on a bridge over the creek and walk up a rough path to the stone ramparts guarding Big Rock House, open the gate, turn right and go up a ramp until suddenly the Great Wall looms and the mountain home in its wild garden is revealed. Forsythia, irises, day lilies, honeysuckle, roses, annuals, chestnuts, a persimmon, a willow, pines, The hearth is a massive in situ boulder, the gourmet kitchen occupies the old open-beamed farmhouse, and the master suite is built into the mountainside on three levels including a crow’s nest study. Big Rock House is filled with Chinese antiques passionately collected by the owners as well as contemporary leather and fine fabrics. The luxury of simplicity definitely doesn’t mean roughing it in this mountain home at the Great Wall. Big Rock Houses is a freestanding vacation home about 5 minutes by car or 15 minutes by foot in the same village as the hotel. From the massive slab of native slate guarding the entryway to the sky-lit interiors to the Great Room that seems to float in the treetops. Mumanyu was created by a family that wanted a very private retreat at the Great Wall, a place for their far-flung clan to gather that would be close to nature and also engaged with the village community around it. Our newest rental home is nestled against a hillside chestnut orchard with a garden of lilacs, forsythia, long-blooming day lilies, and a lawn. There is an outdoor cooking area with gas grill and pizza oven. Inside the light and airy interior you’ll find two bedrooms and a cozy fireplace alcove with a long kang bed. Picture windows offer a glimpse into the landscaped courtyard with hand laid stone walls . Floor heating throughout makes this home ideal for year round stays. Lilac Cottage is a freestanding vacation home about 3 minutes by car from the hotel in the same village Beigou. Imagine lounging on the expansive kang bed watching the light play on the Great Wall as sun streams through the stained glass panels that give a joyous sparkle to Stone Forest. What was once an abandoned three-room hut with grass growing from broken roof tiles has been transformed into a rustic retreat with a romantic outdoor shower in a private courtyard sheltered by a honeysuckle arbor. Exposed stone and brick walls, huge beams, custom paneling, granite hearth. The irregular slate slabs of the floor came from the weathered roof of another but way up in the mountains. The weathered exterior of Grandma’s Place has been preserved. Who would guess that the interior has been transformed into a snug year round home? See the massive wooden beams and stones salvaged from the Qing Dynasty official’s courtyard that stood on this site.
